5 Ways to Avoid Hypnosis Scams

We've all seen the act where a magician invites people up on stage and makes them quack like ducks or believe they can fly like superman. Is this for real? Probably not. But does that mean that hypnosis is a scam?

Hypnosis works with your subconscious mind to produce results like weight loss, controlling unwanted habits, decreasing anxiety, and increasing self-esteem. Many successful athletes, business people, and performers use hypnosis to enhance their abilities and relieve stress.

However, not all hypnotherapists and hypnosis programs are legitimate. Here are five ways you can tell the scam artists from the practitioners who can genuinely help you.

1. Are they licensed?

Hypnotherapy takes years of training. The American Council of Hypnotist Examiners created educational standards for accredited schools and is recognized by many federal and state government agencies. You can also get referrals at the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis website.

2. I will teach you how to control others.

Hypnosis is designed to help you help yourself, not to manipulate people into giving you what you want. Hypnosis can not control you or make you do anything you don't want to do.

3. Unrealistic claims.

The old adage "if it sounds to good to be true..." needs to be applied to hypnosis. For example, it is not a cure for cancer. On the other hand, it may help you with pain management or dealing with the stress and sadness that accompany cancer.

4. Hypnosis is a quick fix.

Like all forms of treatment, the benefits derived from hypnosis are directly proportional to the amount of work you are willing to put in. In other words, nothing is going to change if you don't make the effort.

5 I'm the only one who can help you.

Scam artists are excellent salesmen. No legitimate therapist would believe that they and they alone have the solution to your problem. Similarly, if they claim that for a certain amount of money, they can lift a curse or purge evil spirits, run away as fast as you can.

By using your common sense and doing some research, you can choose a hypnosis program that works for you.
