Book Review For "Getting What You Want"

Kathy Love's first book, "Getting What You Want," is a delicious modern day romantic romp in the small town of Millbrook, Maine. The plot never slows down as Abby discovers she can go home again. Love's writing takes the reader on a wonderful emotional journey that will warm the heartstrings.

Abby Stepp is a research scientist who elects to go back to her hometown in Maine on assignment. While there, she catches up on the all the town happenings with her sister, Ellie, and meets a very handsome contractor, Chase Jordan.

After Abby attends an obligatory party, her car refuses to start and it's Chase to the rescue. After he helps her out, Abby agrees to go out on a date with him. Abby is nervous during the date, but afterwards they share a tender kiss. Abby learns there's more to Chase that she's been led to believe.

When Chase's dog, Chester, gets loose, Abby brings him back to Chase and finds out where he lives. Slowly but surely, Chase starts to fill Abby's thoughts. After avoiding him for a week, Abby seeks him out at his house. They agree to a date after confronting their growing feelings for each other.

After their date, Abby goes to Chase's house and they make love. For Abby, the night is full of joy and intensity. Each new lovemaking encounter brings Abby and Chase closer together. Complications arise when Chase's old girlfriend, Summer-Ann, gets jealous of Abby and tries to break them up. Summer-Ann goes to Abby and implies her son, Willie, was fathered by Chase. Feeling like she's interfering with Chase's relationship with his son, Abby calls off their romance. Chase is stunned. He goes after Abby determined to tell her the truth about Willie and win her back. The ending is a rich reward for the reader.

Love is a master of contemporary romance, drawing rich characters with real flaws and quiet strengths. The plot moves fluidly and holds the reader's attention throughout. If you're a fan of the romance genre, this book will keep you glued to the page. Love's dialogue is snappy and witty. Her descriptions aren't overwhelming, letting the reader visualize Millbrook in their own fashion.

Love does write in a "Lonesome Dove" point of view where the perspective switches between characters without any clear divisions or line breaks. This can be disconcerting for some readers. The love scenes are tasteful and tender. "Getting What You Want" allows the reader to escape to a world of sweet romance.
